Time to stop that induced fading

E-Newsletter 1: Time to Stop Induced Fading

Art Collections demand to be set in the most suitable location, where the temperature is stable and the lighting allows viewers to see the work in clear sight. Do you have the correct settings for your collection?

First and foremost, please avoid direct sunlight to your paintings, due to damaging ultraviolet rays that could damage the surface of a painting just as much as it can damage your skin. Why not look at your painting at different times to make sure that no sunlight is falling directly on to it. If you need to display your painting in a bright room, consider using ultraviolet resistant glass or special window films, such as 3M Home Window Film, on your windows.  These films offer:

  • High heat rejection and protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, the films can reject up to 57% of the total solar energy coming through your windows, providing a ‘cooling effect’
  • Blocking 99% of the UV light, the films provide sun protection factor (SPF) up to 1,000
  • Reduce Glare from blinding sunlight, allowing you to see better

Over time florescent lighting can damage fine art too due to the ultraviolet rays it emits. Incandescent bulbs should be used as they do not emit ultra-violet and are considered a lot safer for lighting artwork. Spotlights too can be dangerous for delicate artworks as they may generate heat over a period of time.

Another way to avoid ultraviolet rays when you are inside a building is to frame your image under an ultraviolet blocking glass, which can be done using a professional framer. Many museums and galleries around the world use this as it has been considered a real safety barrier against long term fading.
